Ram Setu Movie Story

Ram Setu, the much-awaited Bollywood movie, Akshay Kumar’s latest release created a buzz before its release date.

The movie got a grand opening at the box – office but couldn’t sustain it. It is a movie about an atheist turned believer Dr. Aaryan who is 50 – something. He is a renowned archaeologist who is well-known for his excavation in Afghanistan. He handed over an ancient treasure box to the neighboring country in order to have Indo-Pak- Afg unity against the Taliban.

If there is a hero then there must be a villain, hence an evil corporate played by Nasar wanted to destroy that heritage to have some monetary gains. The corporate wished to prove in Court that the Setu is not man-made. It had been formed naturally.

Therefore he called upon Dr. Aaryan who is an atheist so that the verdict could go in the corporate’s favor. And no marks for guessing what the hero Akshay Kumar found out in the expedition. The movie is unimpressive and the end is even more disappointing though some under- water scenes are picturized well.

Ram Setu Movie Review

Akshay Kumar’s film Ram Setu directed by Abhishek Sharma seems promising to the viewers but unfortunately, the movie is slipping down a slippery slope at the box office. The movie is based on the topic of whether Ram Setu is a myth or a reality. Ram Setu is the mythical India-Sri Lanka underwater bridge, believed to be built by Lord Rama.

Ram Setu received mixed reviews from critics. The review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes reported that 20% of the critics, based on 10 reviews, gave a positive review, with an average rating of 3.7/10.

Sanchita Jhunjhunwala of Zoom rated the film 3 stars, and said “The film is based on a premise that is interesting, but feels like a drag every now and then while also seeming too ambitious.”

Bollywood Hungama rated the film 2.5 out of 5 stars and praised its premise to be exciting and the climax to be well executed but criticized the plot and VFX.

Devesh Sharma of Filmfare rated the film 2.5 out of 5 stars and wrote “The film revolves around Akshay Kumar. He has tried his best to be a geeky academic and has vastly underplayed his part”.

Pratikshya Mishra of The Quint rated the film 2.5 out of 5 stars and wrote “Ram Setu disappoints primarily because of how shoddy the script and its treatment is”.

Himesh Mankad of Pinkvilla rated the film 2.5 out of 5 stars and wrote “Ram Setu isn’t a bad film, but it’s not good either – It lies somewhere in between. The subject will have some takers, but we wish, the director had gone wider with his vision by integrating opposition from the natural forces too, and not just stick to the human evils”.

Renuka Vyavahare of The Times of India rated the film 2 out of 5 stars and wrote “Barring a few decent chase sequences, Ram Setu has no spark and is way too preachy”.

Nairita Mukherjee of India Today rated the film 2 out of 5 stars and wrote “Ram Setu feels highly underwhelming. It has little or no cinematic appeal. In the end, it is neither funny nor serious”.

Shubhra Gupta of The Indian Express rated the film 1.5 out of 5 stars and termed the film as a “pedestrian experience” and interested only in hammering home its message”.

Nishad Thaivalappil of News 18 rated the film 0.5 out of 5 stars and criticized the film writing that the film has a poor plot line, VFX, and storytelling.

Hindustan Times said “The result is an enjoyable thrill-a-minute ride that is as fun as it is clichéd. But once you look past the flaws in logic, Ram Setu emerges as a fun popcorn adventure, the kind Bollywood hasn’t produced in quite a while.”

Nandini Ramnath in Scroll. criticized Ram Setu describing it as “WhatsApp forwards with visual effects”. She wrote, “[t]here is no scope for logic or even basic common sense in a narrative that insists that religious belief must be placed above secular knowledge.” She also found the cast’s plot and performance to be lacking.

Anuj Kumar of The Hindu criticized the movie stating that it is similar to the cultural manifesto of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party-led government.

Anna M. M. Vetticad of Firstpost criticized the movie as a Hindutva project.

Subhash K. Jha wrote that the film depends on Hindutva ideology and later forces itself into mythology. He opined that “the reading of the film as pro-establishment propaganda is not only completely and fashionably fallacious, it is also part of the leftwings’ efforts to ridicule and discredit any cinema that takes a pro-Hindutva stance.”

He found the performance of the entire cast, except that of Satyadev’s, to be dull. He also noted that the film could have focused on the debate of faith vs blind faith rather indulged in Indiana Jones-like adventure.

Saibal Chatterjee reviewing for NDTV criticized negatively.

Tina Das reviewing for ThePrint rated 2.5/5 and wrote that the film tries to convince the audience that Hinduism redeems them. She wrote about Kumar’s performance as unconvincing despite trying to imitate the protagonists of Indiana Jones and National Treasure; she wrote that the film incorporated Hindutva ideology along with history and myth and criticized visual effects and CGI animation to be faulty. She opined that if one manages to ignore these nuances, the film would be thrilling.
