Shabaash Mithu Movie Story
Mithali Dorai Raj was born to a Tamil family in Hyderabad, she was learning Bharatnatyam in Dance School but accidentally found her way into cricket at a young age. She was introduced to the game by her childhood friend, Noorie. She met Noorie in the dance school but gradually they both started playing cricket in hiding.
Mithali’s brother was practicing and looking forward to being part of the Indian Cricket Team but the coach picked Mithali instead. This irked her brother and her grandmother so much so, that they both went to some relative’s place to live. Mithali’s parents supported her in her training. Noorie somehow managed to lie to her parents about the game for well more than 5 years.
On the day of selection, Noorie did not turn up as she was married off by her parents at the young age of fifteen. She faced lots of challenges and struggles before becoming the captain of Team India at an early stage of her career. She faces numerous hurdles before putting women-in-blue into the spotlight.
After the 2017 Women’s Cricket World Cup, Viacom 18 Motion Pictures acquired the rights to make a feature film on Raj’s life. She said, “Hoping that this movie inspires more people, especially young girls to take up sports as a career.”
The biopic was planned to shoot in 2019. Raj said, “I think Priyanka Chopra will be a great choice (to play me in the biopic). Our personalities match a lot. I am not a movie buff, so I’d love the experts to do their job. ”Finally it was Taapsee Pannu who was chosen to play the role of Mithali Raj in the biopic named as Shabaash Mithu.

Shabaash Mithu Movie Review
Srijit Mukherji’s Shabaash Mithu is a brave effort to make a biography of Mithali Raj. Within the first few minutes of its runtime, the movie tries to hold your hand and pull you deep inside the life that Mithali Raj has led. The story begins with little Mithali being a Bharatnatyam dancer and leads you to Mithali being a cricketer. Eventually, she comes out to be one of the country’s youngest players to represent India internationally in a sport, dominated by her male counterparts.
The movie tries hard to highlight the underline struggle of all the players and how they feel during the journey of finding their identity. Apart from Mithali’s journey, the movie also highlights how there is discrimination between the sports played by men with the sports played by women in India.
Overall, the movie is not going to have the love of the paying public. The promotion of the movie is weak and people don’t know that the movie has been released. Instead, the main focus of the public was on the other movie starring Rajkumar Rao ‘Hit The first case ‘. It’s a paradox that the movie has been released in a half-hearted manner.
Apart from Tapsee who emoted well in the movie, it is only Vijay Raaj who stands out in his performance. The film does a fair job of outlining the sad state of women’s cricket in India. Mukherji’s direction is good and he has taken extra effort to draw the intricacies of the characterization.
The film is long, and flabby in parts. A couple of teammates get some scenes on their own, especially the one played by the very expressive Sapna Mandal: Raaz is the only other performer who stands out. The background music keeps swelling, trying to tell us how to feel. When will this stop?
The film does a fair job of outlining the sad state of women’s cricket– the bare-bones sleeping arrangements in the training camps, the sink-or-swim attitude of the officials in charge of the team, the worshipping of the boys in blue, and the neglect of the women. But Mukerji’s direction is so on-the-nose that there’s no space for nuance: everything is underlined. Director Srijit Mukerji ensures everything is underlined in this sports drama. The Indian Express
While it’s understandable that the film’s central subject is known to be a less expressive person, nothing stops the screenplay from being crafted with a little more enthusiasm and spunk. Another aspect that really needed more attention was the way the other important characters are crafted – they could have contributed largely to bringing out more layers and nuances in Mithali’s personal and professional journey.
The movie doesn’t amply showcase those edge-of-the-seat, nail-biting moments that would have unfolded in her life, especially during the 2017 world cup. Those keenly waiting to finally watch a movie revolving around Mithali, one of women’s cricket’s most iconic contemporary players, will be left asking for more. Maybe a rerun of one of her milestone matches will help. A slow-paced drama about the women in blue. The Times of India

Taapsee Pannu as Mithali Raj signs a wooden bat with a ballpoint cello gripper pen in the end. No one in an entire production and post-production team found that to be absurd. The movie could have been a lot of great things but it ended up being average. Koimoi
