Karnataka State Film Award -winning director Indrajit Lankesh, who has helmed noted Kannada films like Monalisa and Aishwarya, is venturing into Bollywood.. Shakeela movie is a woman-centric film, inspired on a true story of a well-known adult star of the South Indian Film Industry who rose to fame in the 1990’s .  The film cast Pankaj Tripathi , Richa Chadha, Rajeev Rav

One of the biggest releases since the lockdown, the film attempts to bring back Shakeela’s ability to mint money on- screen. Promising to be a crowd-puller, the film’s teaser starring Chadha along with Pankaj Tripathi and Malayalam actor, Rajeev Pillai has a scintillating touch that will tease the audience but fill them with awe for the enigma of Shakeela. The movie seems to bring back the memory of Dirty Picture in which Silk Smitha was portrayed by Vidya Balan, uninhibitedly. The biopic , portrayed by Richa Chadha traces the journey of the muse – filled with hurdles and discrimination. Shakeela was a prominent adult star who worked in the South Indian film industries in the 1990s.

Hailing from a conservative Muslim family, Shakeela made her film debut, in the age of  16, and soon went on to give the biggest stars a run for their money. The film will trace her journey, the highs and lows she faced.  The teaser gave viewers a glimpse of the stardom Shakeela achieved and the harassment she faced off-screen.

The teaser began with a voice-over stating how every time the attendance in cinema halls fell in the ’90s, the  distributors and exhibitors would think of only one name – Shakeela. Cut to 2020, when the business was again down due to Corona conditions , and Shakeela was called upon once again.

Shakeela Movie Review

The music is average and easily forgettable. The era of nineties and early 2000s is depicted through modest production values, but the film shows some of the most scenic and hitherto unexplored beautifully misty locations of southern India. Despite the film’s overtly racy subject, ‘Shakeela’ manages to put out (no pun intended), a decently aesthetic product.

Overall, ‘Shakeela’ is an honest attempt that tells a much lesser known story of a fallen star, but more conviction and stronger writing, could have propelled this not-so-dirty picture to newer highs.
